A colloquium with Andrew White in Earl Mountbatten room 182 on the 11th of February at 14:00.
Mathematical models are powerful tools for understanding and managing real-world ecological systems. In this talk, I will explain how I became a mathematical modeller and describe a range of projects I have been involved in. These projects use models to assess the impacts of climate change on the world’s vegetation; develop conservation strategies to protect Scotland’s red squirrels; control the spread of African swine fever in wild boar populations in Spain; and help to prevent honey bee colony collapse in the United States. The mathematics won’t be too complicated—the key skills are developing models with the right level of detail and interpreting the results in a way that helps address the real-world problems.
